Meet Ruby:

In the heart of one of London’s most deprived communities lives 7-year-old Ruby. Ruby’s teacher shared with us the incredible challenges she has faced in her short life, especially after losing her mum. This adversity has significantly impacted her education, particularly her literacy development. Before engaging with UK Reads, Ruby’s literacy comprehension was that of a 4-year-old.

Despite the best efforts of her teachers and dad, Ruby’s progress in learning to read has been hindered by the lack of access to books at home, the pace of the school curriculum, and the absence of necessary intensive reading support. Even at this tender age, the absence of these crucial resources has presented a significant roadblock on her educational journey. In a world brimming with opportunities, Ruby’s potential remained untapped.

Ruby’s Success Story

Over 12 months, Ruby received support through our Story Box workshops and engagement in our Penpal project. With the support of her dad, Ruby began to blossom in confidence. Ruby’s eyes were opened to the exciting world of literacy, and her dad too, reaped the benefits by discovering this vital advocacy role in his daughter’s life.

Throughout the programme, Ruby and her dad visited a local library, both registering and now attending together. Their home was enriched with books and resources to sustain Ruby’s engagement, prompting her dad to express,

"It's exactly what she needed. It's tough because, while I understand why reading is so important, I don't have the time or money to buy books for her. UK Reads made me see Ruby's education in a whole new light. She's doing great, and I'm really thankful for that."

The Reality of Deprivation

Unfortunately, Ruby’s story is not unique. In many deprived communities across the UK, children face immense challenges in accessing the resources necessary to advance literacy skills. With the cost-of-living skyrocketing, the cycle of poverty tightens its grip, threatening to limit these children’s futures, literacy intervention programmes are critical to help children reach their full potential.
